Summary

Drawing is a visual art and a practical way to communicate ideas. This lesson introduces the basic meaning of drawing, its many uses, and its development from early human expression to modern practice.

Drawing creates visible marks on a two-dimensional surface or in a digital space. An instrument deposits or moves material—such as graphite, ink, or pigment—to make lines, shapes, and areas of tone. Paper is a common support, but artists also draw on cardboard, wood, canvas, plastic, leather, boards, and temporary surfaces such as blackboards.
