Summary

The Classical period in music lasted roughly from 1750 to 1820, between the Baroque and Romantic periods. This lesson introduces its historical setting and the musical qualities that made the style distinctive.

In the mid-18th century, artists across Europe looked to the ideals of ancient Greece and Rome. This movement, often called Neoclassicism, valued proportion, order, clarity, and balance. In music, those ideals encouraged clearly organized phrases and forms, audible harmonic direction, and a more transparent texture than the dense, layered sound often associated with Baroque music.
