Summary
Depth of field (DOF) describes how much of a scene appears acceptably sharp in a photograph. Understanding what controls it helps photographers choose which parts of an image to emphasize.
Depth of field is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects that appear in acceptably sharp focus in an image. A lens focuses precisely at one subject distance, but objects slightly nearer or farther can still look sharp enough to a viewer.
