Regression analysis helps us investigate whether a response variable depends on one or more explanatory variables and estimate the size of that relationship. This lesson introduces the model and the assumptions that support ordinary least squares (OLS).
Yi=β0+β1X1i+β2X2i+⋯+βkXki+εi
Here, β0 is the intercept, each βj is a slope parameter, and εi is the error term. The error term represents influences not explicitly included in the model, including omitted factors and measurement errors. The subscript i identifies an observation.

What is regression analysis?
A statistical method for testing whether a dependent variable is related to one or more explanatory variables and estimating the magnitude of those relationships.
What does the intercept represent?
The model's predicted value of the dependent variable when all included explanatory variables equal zero.
What is homoscedasticity?
The condition in which the error variance is constant across the values of the explanatory variables.
What is multicollinearity?
A condition in which explanatory variables are correlated, making their separate effects harder to distinguish.
What is autocorrelation?
A relationship between error terms across observations, often encountered in time series data.
Quiz questions
For observation i, how is its regression residual defined?Answer: Observed response minus fitted response.
What criterion does ordinary least squares use to select regression coefficients?Answer: It minimizes the sum of squared residuals.
In a slope test, what does failure to reject the null hypothesis of a zero slope mean?Answer: The evidence is insufficient to establish a nonzero slope.
What does R2 describe in a standard regression model?Answer: The fraction of observed response variation accounted for by the fitted model.
In y^=b0+b1x1+b2x2+b3(x1x2), where x2 is a 0–1 group indicator, what does b3 represent?Answer: The difference in the x1 slopes between the two groups.
