Summary

A regression equation can be used to estimate the value of a dependent variable when a value of an independent variable is known. This lesson explains how to calculate and interpret that estimate, use Excel to generate a forecast, and avoid predictions that extend beyond the data used to build the model.

A simple linear regression equation is written as y^=a+bxŷ = a + bx. Here, y^ŷ is the predicted value of the dependent variable, aa is the intercept, bb is the slope, and xx is the chosen value of the independent variable. The slope describes the predicted change in yy for each one-unit increase in xx.

All flashcards

How is a point prediction calculated in simple linear regression?
Substitute the selected x-value into y^=a+bx\hat{y}=a+bx to calculate the predicted dependent-variable value.
What does the slope in a simple linear regression equation represent?
The predicted change in y for each one-unit increase in x.
What question does a prediction interval answer?
It estimates a range of plausible values for one individual outcome at a specified x-value.
Why is a prediction interval wider than a confidence interval for the mean response?
It accounts for individual-outcome variation as well as uncertainty in the estimated mean.
Where is a regression prediction generally most defensible?
Within the observed range of x-values, where the data support the fitted relationship.

Quiz questions

  1. In a simple linear regression equation, what does the slope represent?Answer: The predicted change in y for a one-unit increase in x.
  2. For y^=9,376.7+61.8x\hat{y}=9{,}376.7+61.8x, what is the predicted revenue when x=80x=80, in thousands of dollars?Answer: 14,320.7 thousand.
  3. In Excel’s `FORECAST` function, which input order is correct?Answer: Chosen x-value, y-data range, then x-data range.
  4. What does a confidence interval for the mean response estimate at a specified x-value?Answer: The average value of y for cases at that x-value.
  5. At the same x-value and confidence level, why is a prediction interval wider than a confidence interval for the mean?Answer: It includes individual-outcome variation in addition to uncertainty about the mean.
