Summary

Starting a business requires more than a promising idea: founders must identify what the venture needs, estimate the cost, and decide how to obtain the money. This lesson distinguishes financing from accounting and explains how financial information supports sound decisions.

Before seeking funds, an entrepreneur should translate a business idea into a practical list of requirements. These may include equipment, inventory, labor, specialized skills, facilities, and operating costs such as rent or utilities. The entrepreneur then estimates the cost of each item and compares the total with available resources.
