Summary

Leadership is not simply a position or a set of personal qualities. It develops through interactions among a leader, followers, and the situation they face. This lesson introduces these components and explains why followers and context are active influences on leadership.

Leadership is a complex, dynamic relationship built over time between a leader and followers who depend on one another to pursue a mutually desired goal. It is useful to distinguish five interacting components: the leader, the followers, the context, the leadership process, and the consequences or outcomes.
