Summary

Description logics (DLs) are formal languages for describing knowledge about a domain and drawing conclusions from that knowledge. This lesson introduces their purpose, their place among other logics, and their role in applications such as ontologies and the Semantic Web.

A central modeling unit is an axiom: a logical statement relating concepts or roles. For example, an axiom might state that every Surgeon is a Physician. DL modeling is therefore based on explicit logical statements, rather than only on a frame that declares and completely defines a class.

All flashcards

Description logic
A family of formal languages for representing domain knowledge and drawing conclusions from it.
Concept, role, and individual
A concept is a category, a role is a relationship, and an individual is a particular domain object.
Description-logic axiom
A logical statement that expresses a general relationship between concepts or roles.
Expressiveness–complexity trade-off
Adding expressive features can represent more knowledge but may increase the computational cost of reasoning.
Description logics and OWL
Description logics provide logical foundations for OWL ontologies and related reasoning tools.

Quiz questions

  1. Under the open-world assumption, what follows when a knowledge base does not state that an individual has a condition?Answer: The omission alone does not establish that the individual lacks the condition.
  2. Without the unique-name assumption, what can be concluded about two different individual names?Answer: They may refer to the same domain object.
  3. What does subsumption of concept C by concept D mean?Answer: Every instance of C is also an instance of D.
  4. In ALC, what does a universal restriction on role R to concept C require?Answer: Every R-related successor belongs to C, with no successor required.
  5. What does concept consistency testing determine?Answer: Whether a concept can have an instance without contradiction.
