Summary

Chemical reaction engineering, also called reaction engineering or reactor engineering, is a specialty within chemical engineering and industrial chemistry concerned with chemical reactors and reaction systems. It is often associated with catalytic processes, in which a catalyst may be homogeneous (in the same phase as the reacting mixture) or heterogeneous (in a different phase).

All flashcards

What does chemical reaction engineering study?
How reaction chemistry and engineering conditions interact to affect reaction-system performance.
How do homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts differ?
A homogeneous catalyst is in the same phase as the reacting mixture; a heterogeneous catalyst is in a different phase.
Which factors are considered together when assessing reactor performance?
Reaction kinetics, flow, mass transfer, heat transfer, feed composition, and operating conditions.
What role do ISCRE conferences play in reaction engineering?
They bring researchers, industry practitioners, early-career researchers, and students together to discuss advances and future directions.
How do the Amundson and Aris awards differ in purpose?
The Amundson Award recognizes major influence on the field; the Aris Young Investigator Award recognizes outstanding early-career research.

Quiz questions

  1. How can limited mass transfer affect a catalytic reaction system?Answer: It can slow the delivery of reactants to the catalyst.
  2. Which statement describes the scope of chemical reaction engineering?Answer: It can address reactions integrated into equipment or processes without a stand-alone reactor.
  3. Who is associated with coining the term “chemical reaction engineering,” and in what context?Answer: J.C. Vlugter, while preparing the first European symposium in Amsterdam in 1957.
  4. What does the Neal R. Amundson Award recognize?Answer: A pioneer whose original contributions significantly influenced reaction engineering theory or practice.
  5. What age requirement applies to the Rutherford Aris Young Investigator Award?Answer: The recipient must be under 40 at the end of the award year.
