Summary

A structure must resist forces throughout its service life, from its own weight to people, vehicles, weather, and other actions. This lesson introduces structural loads and explains the main categories used to describe them.

A structural load, also called a structural action, is a mechanical load or force applied to a structural element. A load can cause stress, deformation, displacement, or acceleration in a structure. Structural analysis examines how structures and their components respond to these actions.

All flashcards

What is a structural load?
A mechanical load or force applied to a structural element. It can produce stress, deformation, displacement, or acceleration.
What is a dead load?
A relatively constant, long-lasting load, such as the structure's own weight or fixtures installed permanently. It is also called a permanent or static load.
What is a live load?
A temporary, variable, or moving load, such as people, movable objects, maintenance equipment, or vehicles on a bridge.
What defines an impact load?
It is applied over a time shorter than one-third of the receiving material's natural vibration period.
Why are cyclic loads important?
Repeated loading or vibration can accumulate fatigue damage, which may eventually cause structural failure.

Quiz questions

  1. Which type of structural load results from temperature changes and thermal expansion?Answer: A thermal load
  2. What is the purpose of a load factor in structural design?Answer: To account for uncertainty and support a target level of reliability
  3. What does a structural load combination represent?Answer: A design situation in which multiple types of load act together
  4. How is an aircraft's ultimate load typically related to its limit load?Answer: It is typically 1.5 times the limit load
  5. What do aircraft crash loads concern?Answer: A structure's ability to withstand deceleration during a major ground impact
