Summary

This lesson introduces DHCP, explains why networks use it, and traces how it developed from earlier configuration protocols.

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) automatically supplies devices with IP addresses and other network settings. Instead of an administrator configuring every device by hand, a DHCP client requests configuration from a DHCP server.

All flashcards

What is DHCP?
DHCP is a network management protocol that lets clients obtain IP addresses and other communication settings automatically from a server.
What is a DHCP lease?
A lease is a time-limited assignment of an IP address and configuration parameters to a client. The client generally needs to renew it to keep using the assignment.
How did BOOTP improve on RARP?
BOOTP introduced relay agents, allowing requests to cross network boundaries so one central server could serve clients on multiple subnets.
How does dynamic allocation work?
The server leases an address from a pool for a specified period. If the client does not renew the lease, the server can reclaim and reassign the address.
How does manual DHCP allocation work?
An administrator binds a client identifier, such as a MAC address, to a specific IP address so the server offers that address to the identified client.

Quiz questions

  1. What is DHCP's primary purpose?Answer: Automatically supplying IP addresses and related network settings to clients.
  2. How did BOOTP address a limitation of RARP?Answer: It added relay agents so a central server could serve clients across multiple subnets.
  3. What major address-allocation capability did DHCP add to the BOOTP-based approach?Answer: It introduced pool-based leases, allowing unrenewed addresses to return to use.
  4. Which description best fits dynamic DHCP allocation?Answer: A lease is issued and may return to the pool after nonrenewal.
  5. What happens in manual DHCP allocation?Answer: An administrator maps a client identifier to a particular IP address.
