Summary

A logic gate is a device that performs a Boolean function: it applies a logical operation to one or more binary inputs and produces one binary output. In digital circuits, the values are commonly represented as 0 and 1, corresponding to low and high logical states.

A gate's behavior can be described with a truth table, which lists every possible input combination and the corresponding output. For a gate with two inputs, there are four possible combinations: 00, 01, 10, and 11.

All flashcards

What is a logic gate?
A device that performs a Boolean function on one or more binary inputs and produces a single binary output.
What information does a truth table provide?
It lists the possible input combinations for a logic function and the output associated with each combination.
How do AND and OR differ?
AND is 1 only when both inputs are 1. OR is 1 when at least one input is 1.
What distinguishes XOR from XNOR?
XOR is 1 when two inputs differ. XNOR is 1 when the inputs are the same.
What does cascading gates mean?
Connecting one gate's output to another gate's input to compose a larger logic function.

Quiz questions

  1. Why are NAND gates called functionally complete?Answer: NAND gates alone can implement every Boolean function.
  2. How can sequential logic differ from combinational logic?Answer: Its output can depend on the system's previous state.
  3. What does a register made from parallel flip-flops store?Answer: A multi-bit value.
  4. What kinds of MOSFETs are combined in CMOS logic?Answer: N-channel and p-channel MOSFETs.
  5. What can an FPGA do after it has been manufactured?Answer: Be reprogrammed to change its hardware logic function.
