Summary

An RC circuit combines resistors and capacitors. This lesson introduces the components and explains how a charged capacitor discharges through a resistor when no external source is connected.

A resistor–capacitor circuit, or RC circuit, contains one or more resistors and capacitors. A first-order RC circuit has one resistor with resistance RR and one capacitor with capacitance CC. The circuit may be driven by a voltage or current source, or it may be allowed to respond naturally to energy already stored in the capacitor.

All flashcards

What is the natural response of a capacitor-resistor loop?
The behavior produced as stored capacitor energy is released through the resistor without an external source.
What is a transfer function?
The ratio of an output to an input in the Laplace domain, assuming zero initial conditions.
What does the phase of a sinusoidal circuit response describe?
The timing shift of the output relative to the input.
What is the transimpedance of a parallel RC network driven by current?
The output-voltage to input-current ratio, VoutIin=R1+sRC\frac{V_{out}}{I_{in}}=\frac{R}{1+sRC}.
What does a pole represent in a transfer function?
A value of ss that makes the transfer function's denominator zero.

Quiz questions

  1. In the Laplace domain, what is the impedance of a capacitor with capacitance CC?Answer: 1Cs\frac{1}{Cs}
  2. In a series RC circuit, what kind of filter results when output is measured across the capacitor?Answer: A low-pass filter that attenuates high frequencies.
  3. For a series RC circuit, what is the ordinary cutoff frequency?Answer: fc=12πRCf_c=\frac{1}{2\pi RC}
  4. Where is the pole of either series RC voltage transfer function?Answer: s=−1RCs=-\frac{1}{RC}
  5. For the series RC circuit, where is the zero of the resistor-output transfer function?Answer: At s=0s=0, the origin.
