Summary

Backpropagation is a method for efficiently calculating how a neural network's loss changes when its parameters change. Those gradients are essential for training, but calculating gradients and updating weights are distinct operations.

A feedforward neural network transforms an input vector xx through a sequence of layers. Each layer combines incoming values with weights, then applies an activation function. The final output is a prediction, often written g(x)g(x).

All flashcards

What is backpropagation?
An efficient application of the chain rule that computes the loss gradient with respect to neural-network parameters, proceeding from output toward input.
What does a loss function measure?
It assigns a scalar cost to the discrepancy between a model's prediction and the desired target.
What happens in a forward pass?
The input is transformed layer by layer into activations and a final prediction; the loss can then be evaluated against the target.
What happens in a backward pass?
Derivatives of the loss are propagated backward through the network so the gradient for each parameter can be computed.
How are backpropagation and gradient descent related?
Backpropagation computes gradients. Gradient descent is one possible optimizer that uses those gradients to update parameters.

Quiz questions

  1. What does backpropagation compute for a neural network?Answer: Gradients of the loss with respect to network parameters.
  2. What is the role of a loss function in supervised learning?Answer: It measures prediction discrepancy relative to the target.
  3. Which statement correctly describes a forward pass?Answer: It propagates activations from the input toward a network prediction.
  4. Why does backpropagation use the chain rule?Answer: It combines derivatives along dependencies in composed operations.
  5. A system computes parameter gradients and then passes them to Adam. Which part is backpropagation?Answer: Backpropagation supplies gradients; Adam uses them to update parameters.
