Summary
Overfitting occurs when a model fits the data it has already seen so closely that it fails to predict new observations reliably. This lesson introduces overfitting, underfitting, and the balance between model complexity and generalization.
A model is overfitted when it captures not only meaningful patterns in its training data, but also random fluctuations that do not represent the underlying process. These fluctuations are called noise or residual variation.
