Summary

Boolean values help programs make decisions. They represent answers to questions that have only two possible outcomes, such as yes or no. In Python, Boolean values are especially useful in conditions, comparisons, and program logic.

A Boolean value represents one of two possibilities: True or False. For example, a program might ask whether a crosswalk signal is on, whether a user is an administrator, or whether a number is even. Each question can be represented by a Boolean result.

All flashcards

What is a Boolean value in Python?
A value that represents one of two possibilities: `True` or `False`. Python uses the `bool` data type.
How does `bool()` convert numbers and strings?
Zero and empty strings convert to `False`; nonzero numbers and non-empty strings convert to `True`.
How do `True` and `False` convert to integers and floats?
`True` converts to `1` or `1.0`; `False` converts to `0` or `0.0`.
What is the difference between `=` and `==`?
`=` assigns a value to a variable. `==` compares two values for equality and returns a Boolean result.
How can a program test whether an integer is even?
Check whether `number % 2 == 0`; the expression is true when division by 2 leaves no remainder.

Quiz questions

  1. In Python, what is the result of comparing the strings `"Admin"` and `"admin"` with `==`?Answer: `False`, because string comparison is case-sensitive
  2. What does `bool(-3)` return in Python?Answer: `True`
  3. What is the result of `float(False)` in Python?Answer: `0.0`
  4. Which Python operator tests whether two values are not equal?Answer: `!=`
  5. What does `bool("0")` return in Python?Answer: `True`, because `"0"` is a non-empty string
