Summary

Python programs often work with numbers to calculate totals, convert measurements, and solve problems. In this lesson, you will learn how Python represents basic values and how arithmetic expressions are evaluated.

A data type describes the kind of value a program is working with. Python's two basic numeric types are integers and floating-point numbers.

All flashcards

What is a data type?
A data type describes the kind of value a program is working with, such as an integer, a floating-point number, or a string.
How do an integer, a float, and a string differ?
An integer is a whole-number value, a float is a number represented with a decimal point, and a string is text enclosed in quotation marks. For example, `10`, `10.0`, and `"10"` have different types.
What are Python's four basic arithmetic operators?
Addition `+`, subtraction `-`, multiplication `*`, and division `/`.
What does operator precedence determine?
It determines the order in which operations in an expression are performed. For example, multiplication is evaluated before addition unless parentheses change the order.
How can a program convert meters to feet using the factor 3.28?
Multiply the number of meters by `3.28`. For example, `feet = meters * 3.28`; with 10 meters, the result is 32.8 feet.

Quiz questions

  1. What data type does the value `10.0` have in Python?Answer: It has the floating-point type, `float`.
  2. Which operator performs multiplication in Python?Answer: The asterisk operator, `*`.
  3. What is the result of `1 + 2 * 3`?Answer: `7`, because multiplication is evaluated before addition.
  4. What is the result of `(1 + 2) * 3`?Answer: `9`, because the parentheses make addition happen first.
  5. What value is stored in `feet` after `meters = 10`, `meter2feet = 3.28`, and `feet = meters * meter2feet`?Answer: `32.8`.
