Summary
Quantization converts values from a large, often continuous, set into a smaller set of representable values. It is essential in digital signal processing and lossy compression because digital systems represent signals with finite sets of values.
A quantizer maps each input value to one of a countable set of output values. Rounding a real number to the nearest integer is a simple example: infinitely many possible real inputs map to a smaller set of integers.
