Summary

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) gives people a shared visual way to describe systems. Like a blueprint for a building, a UML model can communicate a system’s structure and behavior before or during implementation.

UML is a general-purpose, object-oriented visual modeling language. It defines notation and meaning for diagrams that represent different aspects of a system, including its structure, behavior, and interactions. UML 2 defines 14 diagram types.

Quiz questions

  1. Which UML diagram arranges messages exchanged by participants in time order?Answer: A sequence diagram
  2. Which UML diagram depicts actors interacting with a system’s functionality?Answer: A use case diagram
  3. What does XML Metadata Interchange (XMI) enable for UML models?Answer: Exchange of model information between compatible tools
  4. Why can look-across cardinality notation be difficult to interpret in an n-ary relationship?Answer: Its interpretation can become ambiguous when more than two participants are involved.
  5. What is the main role of a deployment diagram?Answer: To show how artifacts and components are deployed to computational nodes
