Summary

A landform is a recognizable feature on the solid surface of Earth or another planetary body. Landforms range from vast mountain ranges and ocean basins to smaller features such as hills, valleys, and ridges. Understanding their shapes, arrangement, and origins helps us describe landscapes and interpret the processes that shape planetary surfaces.

A landform is a physical feature on the solid surface of Earth or another planetary body. Examples include hills, mountains, plains, plateaus, canyons, and valleys. Coastal and oceanic landforms include bays, peninsulas, mid-ocean ridges, underwater volcanoes, and ocean basins.

All flashcards

What is a landform?
A recognizable physical feature on the solid surface of Earth or another planetary body, such as a mountain, valley, or ocean basin.
How do terrain, relief, and topography relate?
Terrain, or relief, describes the three-dimensional highs, lows, and slopes of a land surface. Topography describes or studies the arrangement and form of those features, and is also often used as a synonym for relief.
What is bathymetry?
Bathymetry is the description or study of underwater terrain and its depths and shapes.
What are elementary landforms?
They are the smallest relatively homogeneous divisions of a land surface at a given scale or resolution. Their boundaries occur where surface properties change, and their identification depends on the scale of observation.
How are DEMs and LIDAR used to study landforms?
A digital elevation model (DEM) represents surface elevations digitally and can be analyzed to identify terrain features. LIDAR uses laser measurements to collect especially detailed elevation data.

Quiz questions

  1. What is a landform?Answer: A physical feature on a solid planetary surface.
  2. What term describes the arrangement and form of land features across an area?Answer: Topography.
  3. Why can classification of a hill or plateau depend on observation scale?Answer: Its identification and boundaries can vary with spatial extent and resolution.
  4. What does LIDAR use to measure distance when collecting detailed surface data?Answer: Laser light.
  5. Which process wears away and transports surface material through water, wind, ice, or gravity?Answer: Erosion.
