Summary

This lesson explores the geography of the Indian subcontinent and the urban society that developed around the Indus River. The Indus cities reveal a sophisticated civilization whose organization differed from that of many other ancient states.

India occupies a large subcontinent in South Asia. Its northern edge is marked by the Himalayas, which form a natural barrier. South of the mountains are the river valleys of the Indus and Ganges, while the tropical south is separated from these valleys by mountains and forests.
