Summary

This lesson explores how Greek civilization revived after the Mycenaean collapse and how independent city-states, shared religious traditions, trade, and new economic practices shaped Archaic Greece.

The Mycenaean kingdoms collapsed around 1100 BCE. The centuries that followed, from approximately 1100 to 800 BCE, are known as the Greek Dark Ages. Around 800 BCE, population growth, renewed trade, and the return of literacy helped begin a cultural revival. The period from 800 to 500 BCE is called Archaic Greece, from the Greek word arche, meaning beginning.
