Summary

This lesson introduces Rococo as a European artistic style and traces how its name and historical reputation developed. Understanding its origins helps explain why Rococo is often described as both a response to Baroque art and the style that preceded Neoclassicism.

Rococo emerged in France in the 1730s as a reaction against the formal Louis XIV style. It is often regarded as the final expression of the Baroque movement, and is sometimes called Late Baroque. Compared with the monumental formality associated with the earlier court style, Rococo favored lighter, more intimate settings and more freely flowing ornament.
