Summary

This lesson examines how western Europe changed after Roman political authority weakened, and how Roman and Germanic traditions combined to shape early medieval society.

There was no single moment when Roman life disappeared from western Europe. The eastern Roman Empire continued for centuries, while in the west Roman customs, Latin learning, and administrative practices often survived after Roman political authority had weakened. The year 476 is traditionally used as a turning point because the German general Odoacer deposed the emperor Romulus Augustulus and took the title King of Italy rather than Roman emperor.
