Summary

This lesson introduces the dialectic method and explains how Marx transformed Hegel’s account of historical change. The distinction matters because it shifts the focus from the development of ideas to conflicts in material life.

Hegel understood history as a process of development through interaction and conflict. A thesis is an existing condition or position. An antithesis challenges or contradicts it. Their interaction produces a synthesis: a new, higher state that takes up aspects of what came before while moving beyond the conflict.
