Summary
Religions organize their communities in different ways, from small new movements to institutions closely connected with government. Sociologists use terms such as cult, sect, denomination, and ecclesia to compare these arrangements.
A cult, also sometimes called a new religious movement (NRM), is a relatively new religious group. Such groups may be small or organized around a charismatic leader, and some may exercise strong control over members. In contemporary U.S. usage, cult often has a negative or sensationalized meaning, so the term should be used carefully. Sociologically, it describes a type of organization rather than proving that a group is harmful. Many religions began as small movements before growing and becoming more formally organized.
