Summary

This lesson explores how the Song dynasty emerged after the collapse of the Tang and how it organized government around Confucian ideals. These choices helped create stability but also shaped Song China’s approach to military power.

When the Tang dynasty disintegrated in 907 CE, generals established independent states across former Tang territory. Khitan Liao and Xia rulers took control of many northern regions. In the central and southern regions, the Zhao family persuaded fractured political units that they possessed the Mandate of Heaven—the favor of the natural order that could be lost by an unworthy ruler. This helped establish the Song dynasty in the 960s.

All flashcards

What was the Mandate of Heaven?
It was the belief that the natural order granted a ruler legitimacy and favor, but that an unworthy ruler could lose this mandate.
Who were the mandarins?
Mandarins were civilian officials who advised and served the emperor. They were selected through examinations on Confucian texts and formed the core of the governing class.
What changed in Song examination policy?
Song reforms made official examinations more merit-based and less subject to nepotism, although families with resources still had an advantage in preparing their sons.
Why did Song rulers favor civilian officials over military leaders?
They worried that generals could become powerful enough to challenge the emperor and civilian government, so mandarins were used to supervise policy and restrain military influence.
Why did Song military strength have limits?
The Song possessed advanced technologies, including gunpowder weapons, but Confucian pacifism and fear of a strong army often discouraged their effective use.
