Summary

The Kushan Empire connected societies across Central Asia, India, China, and the Mediterranean. Its position made it an important intermediary in long-distance trade, while its population and artistic traditions reflected centuries of cultural exchange.

The Kushan Empire flourished from the second century BCE to the third century CE in regions that today include parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and northern India. It began when the Yuezhi, a people of Central Asia, united several nomadic tribes into a single state. The state took the name Kushan from its ruling dynasty and gradually gained territory from the eastern Parthian Empire.
