Summary

This lesson explains why the Portuguese royal court moved across the Atlantic and how its presence transformed Brazil. The relocation was an unusual response to Napoléon’s wars, but it also helped create the institutions and political unity that shaped Brazil’s later independence.

In 1807, Napoléon sought to isolate Britain through the Continental System, a policy intended to damage Britain economically by restricting its trade with Europe. Portugal had a longstanding alliance with Britain and could not fully comply. Napoléon therefore obtained permission from the Spanish Crown to send French troops across Spain and invade Portugal by land.

All flashcards
