Summary

Japanese is the principal language of the Japonic family and is spoken by millions of people in Japan and communities around the world. This lesson introduces its classification, historical development, and geographic reach.

Japanese belongs to the Japonic language family, which also includes the Ryukyuan languages and Hachijō. The relationship between Japanese and Ryukyuan is widely supported. Many proposals have attempted to connect Japonic to other families, including Ainu, Koreanic, and Austronesian, but none has gained broad acceptance.
