Summary
This lesson traces Latin literature from its beginnings in Roman theater to the celebrated writing of the Golden Age. It introduces the authors, genres, and historical changes that shaped early Roman literature.
Formal Latin literature is generally dated to 240 BC, when a Latin stage play was performed in Rome, one year after the First Punic War ended. The first plays were adaptations of Greek drama. Livius Andronicus, a Greek prisoner of war brought to Rome, translated Homer’s Odyssey into Latin using Saturnian meter, a traditional Latin verse form.
