Summary

The Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) sets out many of the EU’s policies, powers, and operating arrangements. This lesson traces its origins and explains how it fits alongside the Treaty on European Union (TEU).

The TFEU began as the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community, commonly called the Treaty of Rome. It created the European Economic Community (EEC), one of the European Communities that formed an important foundation for later European integration.
