Mutualism is an ecological interaction between two or more species in which each species experiences a net benefit. The benefits may include food, nutrients, protection, or help with reproduction and dispersal. A benefit to both partners does not mean that they exchange identical resources; each partner may contribute something different.
For example, in the relationship between flowering plants and pollinators, a bee obtains nectar or pollen, while the plant receives pollen transfer that can enable fertilization. Both benefit, though in different ways.

What is mutualism?
An ecological interaction between two or more species in which each species experiences a net benefit.
How is mutualism different from parasitism?
In mutualism, both partners benefit overall. In parasitism, one partner benefits while the other is harmed.
Does symbiosis always mean mutualism?
No. Symbiosis means prolonged close physical association. It may be mutualistic, parasitic, or commensal.
What does cooperation most commonly refer to?
It most commonly refers to interactions among members of the same species that increase fitness, although it has also been used for some mutualistic interactions.
How can mutualism influence biological diversity?
Mutualisms can shape evolutionary traits, such as flower forms associated with pollination, and have been linked to major evolutionary events.
Quiz questions
In a Type I mutualism model, how does the benefit to one species change as its partner's density increases?Answer: It increases linearly with partner density.
What can cause the benefit in a Type II functional response to level off?Answer: Handling time limits how many additional encounters can be processed.
What does protocooperation describe?Answer: A mutualism in which partners benefit but do not depend on each other for survival.
What is zoochory?Answer: The dispersal of plant seeds by animals.
What distinguishes a facultative mutualism from an obligate one?Answer: Partners in a facultative mutualism benefit but can persist without one another.
