Summary

This lesson introduces the main structures of the female reproductive system and explains how the menstrual cycle prepares the body for possible conception.

The ovaries are gonads that contain and release ova, or eggs. Ova are gametes carrying genetic information. Most biological females have two ovaries, located on either side of the uterus.

Each fallopian tube extends from an ovary toward the uterus. An egg released from an ovary may enter a tube; fertilization commonly occurs in a fallopian tube. The uterus, also called the womb, is the organ in which an embryo and later a fetus can develop.
