Summary

This lesson introduces protists and protozoans, including their varied cell structures, ways of obtaining food, and life-cycle strategies. These ideas help explain how microscopic eukaryotes live in different environments and cause infection.

Protist is a historical, informal label for a diverse collection of microscopic eukaryotes. It is not a formal taxonomic group because organisms called protists do not all share one exclusive evolutionary origin. Some are animal-like protozoans, some are plant-like algae, and others have fungus-like characteristics. Algae may be unicellular or multicellular; protozoans are nonphotosynthetic and unicellular.

All flashcards

Holozoic feeding
Ingestion of whole food particles, often by phagocytosis.
Saprozoic feeding
Uptake of small, soluble food molecules.
Syngamy
Fusion of haploid gametes in a sexual process.
Contractile vacuole
A cell structure that helps regulate water balance.
Plasmodial slime mold
A slime mold that forms one large, multinucleate amoeboid cell.
