Summary
Ribonucleotides connect through phosphodiester bonds, forming a strand with a sugar-phosphate backbone and bases extending from it. In RNA, adenine pairs with uracil, while guanine pairs with cytosine.
RNA is usually single stranded, unlike the typically double-stranded DNA molecule. However, a single RNA strand can fold back on itself. Complementary sequences within the same molecule form intramolecular base pairs, producing stable shapes and complex three-dimensional structures. These shapes are important to the functions of many RNA molecules.
