Summary

Transcription copies the information in a gene from DNA into RNA. This lesson introduces the RNA product, explains how DNA guides RNA synthesis, and follows the stages of transcription in bacteria.

Transcription is the synthesis of an RNA molecule using a DNA sequence as a guide. The resulting RNA transcript is single-stranded and contains the ribonucleotides adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and uracil (U). RNA can carry a mobile copy of genetic information from DNA to other parts of the cell.

All flashcards

What is a transcription bubble?
The locally unwound region of DNA where RNA synthesis takes place.
What is the antisense strand?
The DNA template strand read by RNA polymerase; the RNA transcript is complementary to it.
What does sigma factor do in bacteria?
It helps bacterial RNA polymerase recognize and bind particular promoters.
Why can RNA polymerase begin synthesis without a primer?
It can initiate a new RNA chain without a pre-existing 3′-OH group.
What is alternative splicing?
The inclusion of different exon combinations in mature RNA transcripts from the same gene.

Quiz questions

  1. Which eukaryotic RNA polymerase primarily transcribes protein-coding pre-mRNA?Answer: RNA polymerase II
  2. What is one role of the 5′ cap on eukaryotic protein-coding RNA?Answer: It helps protect the RNA and is recognized during translation initiation.
  3. What does the poly-A tail help do on eukaryotic protein-coding RNA?Answer: It protects the transcript and helps signal its export from the nucleus.
  4. What does polycistronic mean when describing an mRNA molecule?Answer: It encodes multiple polypeptides.
  5. Which statement describes transcription and translation in eukaryotic cells?Answer: Transcription occurs in the nucleus, and mature mRNA is exported for cytoplasmic translation.
