Summary

This lesson introduces L'Hôpital's rule, explains why it is useful, and identifies the indeterminate forms to which it applies.

If f(x)f(x) and g(x)g(x) approach finite limits and the limit of g(x)g(x) is nonzero, ordinary limit laws give

lim⁡x→cf(x)g(x)=lim⁡x→cf(x)lim⁡x→cg(x).\lim_{x\to c}\frac{f(x)}{g(x)}=\frac{\lim_{x\to c}f(x)}{\lim_{x\to c}g(x)}.

But if both numerator and denominator approach zero, or both grow without bound, direct substitution produces 0/00/0 or ∞/∞\infty/\infty. These are indeterminate forms: the displayed symbols alone do not determine the limit. Different functions with the same form can have different limits.

What is an indeterminate form?
A limit form, such as 0/00/0 or ∞/∞\infty/\infty, that does not by itself determine the limit.
State the basic L'Hôpital rule.
For an eligible 0/00/0 or ∞/∞\infty/\infty limit, if the hypotheses hold and lim⁡f′(x)/g′(x)\lim f'(x)/g'(x) exists, then lim⁡f(x)/g(x)=lim⁡f′(x)/g′(x)\lim f(x)/g(x)=\lim f'(x)/g'(x).
How does L'Hôpital's rule differentiate a quotient?
It differentiates the numerator and denominator separately; it does not apply the quotient rule to f/gf/g.
Why can quotients with the form 0/00/0 have different limits?
The quotient depends on the relative rates at which its numerator and denominator approach zero.
What should be checked before applying L'Hôpital's rule?
Confirm an eligible indeterminate form and verify the rule's hypotheses.

Quiz questions

  1. Suppose f(x),g(x)→0f(x),g(x)\to 0 as x→cx\to c, the hypotheses of L'Hôpital's rule hold, and lim⁡x→cf′(x)/g′(x)=L\lim_{x\to c} f'(x)/g'(x)=L. What follows?Answer: lim⁡x→cf(x)/g(x)=L\lim_{x\to c} f(x)/g(x)=L.
  2. For a positive integer nn, what is lim⁡x→∞xn/ex\lim_{x\to\infty}x^n/e^x?Answer: 00
  3. As x→0+x\to0^+, how can the product xln⁡xx\ln x be rewritten as a quotient with an eligible form?Answer: ln⁡x1/x\frac{\ln x}{1/x}
  4. For the parametric curve (g(t),f(t))(g(t),f(t)), what is the tangent slope when g′(t)≠0g'(t)\ne 0?Answer: f′(t)/g′(t)f'(t)/g'(t)
  5. What is lim⁡x→0+xx\lim_{x\to0^+}x^x, evaluated by taking logarithms?Answer: 11
