Summary

Differentiation rules turn the definition of a derivative into a practical toolkit. This lesson introduces rules for constants, sums and constant multiples, products, and compositions of functions.

A constant function f(x)=cf(x)=c does not change as xx changes, so its derivative is zero: f′(x)=0f'(x)=0. Geometrically, its graph is a horizontal line with slope zero. This also follows from the limit definition because f(x+h)−f(x)=c−c=0f(x+h)-f(x)=c-c=0.

What is the constant rule?
If f(x)=cf(x)=c for a constant cc, then f′(x)=0f'(x)=0 because the function does not change with xx.
State the linearity rule.
For constants a,ba,b and differentiable functions f,gf,g, (af+bg)′=af′+bg′(af+bg)'=af'+bg'. It includes the constant-factor, sum, and difference rules.
How does the product rule work?
For two differentiable factors, (fg)′=f′g+fg′(fg)'=f'g+fg'. Differentiate one factor at a time, keeping the other factor unchanged in each term.
What is the chain rule?
For a composition h(x)=f(g(x))h(x)=f(g(x)), h′(x)=f′(g(x))g′(x)h'(x)=f'(g(x))g'(x): differentiate the outer function at the inner input, then multiply by the inner derivative.
How is the derivative of an inverse function related to the original derivative?
If g=f−1g=f^{-1}, then g′(y)=1/f′(g(y))g'(y)=1/f'(g(y)) wherever the functions are differentiable and f′(g(y))≠0f'(g(y))\ne0.
