Summary

The Jacobian matrix collects all first-order partial derivatives of a vector-valued function. Its dimensions and entries reveal how several inputs influence several outputs.

Jf(x)=[∂fi∂xj]i=1,…,m; j=1,…,n.J_f(x)=\left[\frac{\partial f_i}{\partial x_j}\right]_{i=1,\ldots,m;\,j=1,\ldots,n}.

Rows correspond to output components; columns correspond to input variables. Therefore, the matrix has one row per output and one column per input. Other common notations include DfDf, ∇f\nabla f, and ∂(f1,…,fm)/∂(x1,…,xn)\partial(f_1,\ldots,f_m)/\partial(x_1,\ldots,x_n). Some authors use the transpose convention, so checking dimensions and definitions is useful.

What does the Jacobian matrix represent at a differentiable point?
The linear map that gives the best first-order approximation to changes in the function's output.
How do Jacobians combine under composition?
For differentiable ff and gg, Jg∘f(x)=Jg(f(x))Jf(x)J_{g\circ f}(x)=J_g(f(x))J_f(x).
What does the absolute Jacobian determinant measure?
The local volume-scaling factor of a square transformation.
What factor does polar-to-Cartesian conversion contribute to area?
The Jacobian determinant is rr, so the area element is r dr dφr\,dr\,d\varphi for r≥0r\geq 0.
What is the Hessian of a scalar-valued function?
The matrix of second partial derivatives, equivalently the Jacobian of its gradient.

Quiz questions

  1. For a function F:Rn→RmF:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}^m, when is its Jacobian determinant defined?Answer: When the Jacobian is square, so m=nm=n.
  2. For differentiable f:Rn→Rmf:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}^m and g:Rm→Rkg:\mathbb{R}^m\to\mathbb{R}^k, which formula gives the Jacobian of g∘fg\circ f?Answer: Jg∘f(x)=Jg(f(x))Jf(x)J_{g\circ f}(x)=J_g(f(x))J_f(x)
  3. In a change-of-variables formula for volume, which Jacobian factor is used?Answer: ∣det⁡JF(u)∣|\det J_F(u)|
  4. For x=rcos⁡φx=r\cos\varphi and y=rsin⁡φy=r\sin\varphi, what factor appears in the polar area element?Answer: rr
  5. If f:Rn→Rnf:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}^n is continuously differentiable near pp and det⁡Jf(p)≠0\det J_f(p)\ne 0, what does the inverse function theorem guarantee?Answer: A differentiable inverse for ff on some neighborhood of pp.
