Summary

This lesson introduces binomial coefficients and their role in expanding powers of a sum.

A binomial coefficient is commonly written inomnkinom{n}{k} and read “nn choose kk.” For integers n≥k≥0n\geq k\geq 0, it is the coefficient of xkx^k in the expansion of (1+x)n(1+x)^n. The notation C(n,k)C(n,k) is also used.

The upper number nn is the exponent, and the lower number kk identifies the power of xx whose coefficient is being considered.

Binomial theorem
For a nonnegative integer nn, (x+y)n=∑k=0n(nk)xn−kyk(x+y)^n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}x^{n-k}y^k.
Factorial formula for a binomial coefficient
For 0≤k≤n0\leq k\leq n, (nk)=n!k!(n−k)!\binom{n}{k}=\frac{n!}{k!(n-k)!}, with 0!=10!=1.
Why divide by k!k! when counting unordered selections?
Each group of kk distinct objects is counted once for each of its k!k! orderings.
Generalized binomial coefficient
For nonnegative integer kk, (αk)=α(α−1)⋯(α−k+1)k!\binom{\alpha}{k}=\frac{\alpha(\alpha-1)\cdots(\alpha-k+1)}{k!}.
Multinomial coefficient
For k1+⋯+kr=nk_1+\cdots+k_r=n, (nk1,…,kr)=n!k1!⋯kr!\binom{n}{k_1,\ldots,k_r}=\frac{n!}{k_1!\cdots k_r!}; it is the coefficient of x1k1⋯xrkrx_1^{k_1}\cdots x_r^{k_r} in (x1+⋯+xr)n(x_1+\cdots+x_r)^n.

Quiz questions

  1. For a set of nn distinct objects, what does (nk)\binom{n}{k} count?Answer: Unordered selections of exactly kk objects
  2. Which formula gives (nk)\binom{n}{k} when 0≤k≤n0\leq k\leq n?Answer: n!k!(n−k)!\frac{n!}{k!(n-k)!}
  3. For 1≤k<n1\leq k<n, which equation is Pascal's rule?Answer: (nk)=(n−1k−1)+(n−1k)\binom{n}{k}=\binom{n-1}{k-1}+\binom{n-1}{k}
  4. What is the sum of all coefficients in row nn of Pascal's triangle?Answer: 2n2^n
  5. For which values of xx does the stated Newton binomial series converge for a general exponent α\alpha?Answer: ∣x∣<1|x|<1
