Summary
A current is an ordered movement of electric charge. In 1820, Hans Christian Oersted observed that a compass needle near a wire deflected when current flowed through the wire. This showed that an electric current creates a magnetic field.
The compass needle aligns with the magnetic field at its location. Around a long, straight current-carrying wire, the field lines form concentric circles centered on the wire. The field is stronger close to the wire and weaker farther away; this can be represented by field lines becoming more widely spaced with distance.
