Summary

Uniform convergence strengthens pointwise convergence by requiring one index threshold to work across the entire domain. This distinction explains why some important properties pass to limits under uniform convergence but fail under pointwise convergence.

Let (fn)(f_n) be functions on a set EE, and suppose their pointwise limit is ff. Pointwise convergence means that for each fixed x∈Ex\in E and each ε>0ε>0, there is an index NN such that ∣fn(x)−f(x)∣<ε|f_n(x)-f(x)|<ε whenever n≥Nn\ge N. The required NN may depend on both xx and εε.

Uniform convergence
For every ε>0\varepsilon>0, one index threshold makes ∣fn(x)−f(x)∣<ε|f_n(x)-f(x)|<\varepsilon for every later nn and every xx in the domain.
Supremum-distance criterion
When the errors are bounded, fnf_n converges uniformly to ff exactly when sup⁡x∈E∣fn(x)−f(x)∣→0\sup_{x\in E}|f_n(x)-f(x)|\to 0.
Uniform Cauchy criterion
For real-valued functions, uniform convergence is equivalent to having, for every ε>0\varepsilon>0, one threshold after which ∣fm(x)−fn(x)∣<ε|f_m(x)-f_n(x)|<\varepsilon for all domain points and all later m,nm,n.
Weierstrass M-test
If ∣fn(x)∣≤Mn|f_n(x)|\le M_n everywhere and ∑nMn\sum_n M_n converges, then ∑nfn\sum_n f_n converges absolutely and uniformly.
Derivative-limit theorem
On a closed interval, uniform convergence of fn′f_n' and convergence of fnf_n at one point imply uniform convergence to a differentiable limit whose derivative is lim⁡nfn′\lim_n f_n'.

Quiz questions

  1. If continuous functions fnf_n converge uniformly to ff on a domain, what must be true of ff?Answer: The limit function is continuous on that domain.
  2. Suppose Riemann-integrable functions fnf_n converge uniformly to ff on a compact interval II. Which conclusion follows?Answer: The limit is Riemann integrable and its integral is the limit of the integrals.
  3. For fn(x)=xnf_n(x)=x^n on [0,1][0,1], with limit f(x)=0f(x)=0 for x<1x<1 and f(1)=1f(1)=1, why is convergence not uniform?Answer: For every NN, some xN<1x_N<1 has ∣fN(xN)−f(xN)∣=1/2|f_N(x_N)-f(x_N)|=1/2.
  4. On [a,b][a,b], which assumptions in the derivative-limit theorem ensure that fnf_n converges uniformly to a differentiable function?Answer: The derivatives converge uniformly, and the functions converge at one point.
  5. Under Dini's theorem, what conditions ensure uniform convergence on a compact space?Answer: Continuous functions increase monotonically to a continuous pointwise limit.
