Summary

Skeletal muscle names can seem difficult because there are many muscles and their names often come from unfamiliar Latin or Greek words. Learning the roots and the naming patterns makes the vocabulary easier to understand and remember. Muscle names often describe where a muscle is, what it looks like, how large it is, how its fibers run, how many origins it has, where it attaches, or what action it performs.

What is etymology, and why is it useful in anatomy?
Etymology is the study of word roots, origins, and changes in use over time. It helps learners interpret unfamiliar anatomical names and remember clues about muscles.
What do maximus, medius, and minimus mean in muscle names?
They indicate relative size: maximus means largest, medius means medium-sized, and minimus means smallest.
How do lateralis and medialis describe position?
Lateralis means toward the outside, away from the body’s midline; medialis means toward or closer to the midline.
What does a muscle name based on attachments list first?
It lists the origin first. For example, sternocleidomastoid refers to origins at the sternum and clavicle before indicating insertion at the mastoid process.
What actions do flexors, extensors, abductors, and adductors perform?
Flexors decrease a joint angle; extensors increase it; abductors move a bone away from the midline; and adductors move a bone toward the midline.

Quiz questions

  1. What does etymology study?Answer: The roots, origins, and development of words over time.
  2. What information does the name gluteus minimus provide?Answer: It places the muscle in the gluteal region and marks it as the smallest in its group.
  3. What does lateralis indicate about a muscle’s position?Answer: It is positioned toward the outside, away from the midline.
  4. What does the name sternocleidomastoid reveal about its attachments?Answer: Its origins are at the sternum and clavicle, and it inserts on the mastoid process.
  5. A muscle name includes the term flexor. What action should you expect?Answer: The muscle decreases the angle at a joint.
