Summary
Medieval Islamic medicine grew through the preservation, translation, and development of medical knowledge from many cultures. This lesson explains how that exchange took place and why it made medicine in the Islamic world influential across regions and centuries.
Islamic medicine refers to medicine developed within Islamic civilization, much of it written in Arabic, the shared scholarly language of the period. It was not simply a copy of Greek medicine. Physicians adopted and organized earlier learning, tested ideas against their experience, and added new observations.
