Summary

Balance helps us stay upright and move safely during everyday activities. It depends on keeping the body's center of mass appropriately positioned over its support while the nervous system continually responds to information from the body and its surroundings.

In biomechanics, balance is the ability to keep the vertical line of gravity passing through the body's center of mass within its base of support, with limited postural sway. The base of support is the area beneath and between the parts of the body in contact with the supporting surface, such as the feet during standing.

All flashcards

Mechanical ankle instability
Instability involving inadequate stabilizing structures or movement beyond physiological limits.
Functional ankle instability
Instability involving recurrent sprains or the feeling that the ankle is giving way.
Balance Efficacy Scale
A self-report measure of confidence in performing daily tasks, with or without assistance.
External focus of attention
Attention directed toward the effects of movement or the task's outcome.
Internal focus of attention
Attention directed toward the body's movements themselves.

Quiz questions

  1. What does perturbation training involve?Answer: Applying an external force to challenge stability and encourage a postural response.
  2. What does the Functional Reach Test primarily measure?Answer: How far a person can reach forward while keeping the feet planted.
  3. How many dynamic-balance items are included in the Mini-BESTest?Answer: Fourteen items divided among four balance-control domains.
  4. What does the Berg Balance Scale use to assess balance?Answer: Everyday functional tasks that assess both static and dynamic balance.
  5. During a comparable task, what does a shorter center-of-pressure path generally suggest?Answer: Better postural balance, interpreted in the context of the task.
