Summary

Hemostasis is the coordinated process that limits blood loss when a blood vessel is damaged. This lesson introduces its purpose and the rapid vascular and platelet responses that create an initial seal.

Hemostasis is the process of keeping blood within the circulatory system by preventing and stopping bleeding. It is the first stage of wound healing. The opposite condition is hemorrhage, or bleeding from the circulation.

All flashcards

What is hemostasis?
The process that keeps blood within the circulation by preventing and stopping bleeding.
What is vascular spasm?
Contraction of smooth muscle in an injured vessel that narrows it and reduces local blood flow.
How does von Willebrand factor support platelet plug formation?
It helps platelets adhere to the exposed surface at a vessel injury.
What is primary hemostasis?
The platelet response that forms a temporary plug at an injury site.
How does microfibrillar collagen help control bleeding?
It attracts platelets and promotes clotting, provided the patient's hemostatic pathway functions adequately.

Quiz questions

  1. What does the coagulation cascade ultimately produce to reinforce a platelet plug?Answer: Fibrin strands formed from soluble fibrinogen.
  2. What does secondary hemostasis describe?Answer: Reinforcement of a platelet plug by fibrin.
  3. Hemophilia is an example of a bleeding disorder related to problems with which component?Answer: Clotting factors.
  4. A detached thrombus that lodges in a vessel in the lungs can cause which condition?Answer: Pulmonary embolism.
  5. How does direct pressure help control bleeding?Answer: It applies force to the bleeding site and slows blood loss.
