This lesson explores how cultural bias can shape popular images of people and societies. It focuses on primitivism and orientalism, two persistent ways Euro-American culture has portrayed non-Western peoples. Recognizing these patterns matters because stereotypes can influence everyday interactions, public policy, and how groups are treated.
Cultural bias occurs when people interpret other cultures through assumptions and standards rooted in their own cultural perspective. Bias can appear in movies, advertising, museums, amusement parks, news coverage, and political arguments. A representation may contain elements of truth yet still be distorted if it leaves out context, diversity, or the perspectives of the people portrayed.
