Summary

Instructional scaffolding is support that helps learners accomplish tasks or understand ideas that they could not yet manage independently. This lesson introduces its purpose and its three essential features.

Instructional scaffolding is temporary, responsive support provided by an instructor or another knowledgeable person as a learner develops a skill or understanding. Support is tailored to the learner rather than delivered identically to everyone. This makes scaffolding compatible with student-centered learning and can encourage deeper understanding.
