Summary

A transition is a word, phrase, or other device that guides an audience from one idea to another. In linguistic text, transitions can operate between sentences, paragraphs, or sections. They do more than move the reader forward: they indicate how the ideas are related.

For example, the phrase “it also” can connect a sentence about an act providing new tools with a sentence describing an additional effect of that act. The transition tells readers that the second sentence adds information rather than contradicting or replacing the first.
